SHAVING THE NECK

SHAVING THE NECK

Shaving the neck is for many men a challenge because it is the area on which the majority of men end up getting shaving irritations. This is partly due to the fact that the skin and hair structure is different under the neck when compared to the rest of the face. It is therefore important to get familiar with the properties of your skin under the neck area.
Under the neck, the hairs typically have a lower elevation angle and the skin is rougher than the rest of the face. The combination of these two factors makes the neck area more prone to shaving irritations.
In this post I want to share with you three tips that will improve your shaving experience under the neck area.

PREPARE AND REPREPARE

Preparation is in general very important and more so for a problem area such as the neck. Make sure to hydrate the skin and hairs very well and use a good quality shaving cream. Most men shave the cheeks first and leave the neck to the end of their routine. This is okay, but make sure that the skin under the neck is hydrated well and especially that the lather is not drying out. So when you finish shaving the cheeks, examine the lather under the neck and make sure that it is not too dry.
The neck has a rough skin structure and is characterized by mounds. These contribute to shaving irritations in two ways. First, they can cover the hair shaft and if not handled properly they cause ingrown hairs. In addition, the mounds get in the way of the razor blade. A good way to prepare the neck area for comfortable shaving is to exfoliate on a regular basis.

FOLLOW THE HAIRS

The direction of the hair growth, i.e the grain, is an important indicator for which direction you should be shaving. The neck area might have a complicated grain pattern so examine the grain well and get yourself familiar with it. If while shaving you feel the blade dragging and pulling the skin stop immediately and try shaving in a different direction.

STRETCHING

Stretching the skin flattens the area to be shaven and reduces the chance of the blade dragging over the skin. An easy and comfortable way to stretch the skin under the neck area is to pull the head up and forward. If this does not provide enough flattening of the skin, use your second hand to pull the skin down.

So prepare your skin well and follow the direction of hair growth. Exfoliating makes the neck area less prone to getting irritations. These easy tips will surely give you more comfort when shaving the neck.
