How to keep razor blades sharp as long as possible; a question every shaver asks. There are different types of blades available and regardless of which one you use it might be helpful to maximize the utility of the blades by treating them properly. This does not only save you costs, but also makes shaving more comfortable because the razors remain sharp. In this post I want to share with you a few tips on how to keep razor blades sharp for as long as possible and maximize their lifetime.

The two enemies of your razor blades are the beard hairs and oxidation. When beard hairs are dry they are as tough as a copper wire of the same thickness. This has an impact on the sharp edge of the razor. The same holds true for the oxidation. Due to air and humidity a layer is formed that reduces the sharpness of the blades.

Preparation is key!

In my previous post I explained why preparation is essential to attain a comfortable shave. Good preparation softens the hairs and makes them easier to cut using less force. For the blade, this means that the impact on the sharp edge is reduced since they have to cut hairs that are much softer than before.

Dry the blades

Drying the blades after you finished prevents oxidation and therefore keeps the razor sharp for a longer time. You can dry your razor by using a paper towel or, even better, a hair dryer. Another way to dry the blades quickly is to dip them in alcohol and leave them to dry. Alcohol has drying properties and helps evaporate the moisture quicker.

Keep them safe

After drying the blades, make sure you keep them away from moisture. So, although it might seem convenient, keeping your razors in the shower is not a good idea. You are better off keeping them in you toiletry bag. Make sure to use a protective cap of some kind to protect the blade from getting damaged by surrounding objects. A bottle of perfume, nail clippers, comb or anything can damage your blades and will eventually lead to a less comfortable shave.

So to answer the question ‘how to keep razor blades sharp as long as possible’ in short; Good preparation, drying your razors after usage and keeping them in a dry and safe environment is key. If you want your razors to treat you well, treat them well too!

Good points. Switching to stainless steel blades should also provide a benefit as they will not rust as easily.
